I am
attracted to detail, to the insides. My quest for the infinitely small leads
me to the microscopic world of cellular biology; a world that the naked eye
cannot see but accepts as reality. I posit the cell as a microscopic pod, an
organic vessel holding, storing, and possessing something that cannot be seen
but is accepted as reality. Nowhere is this metaphor of the cell as a vessel
more poignant than in the cells of the brain.
The
idea of a memory dwelling within a cell, being held, contained, raises
questions of value, perspective and truth. I search for a balance between
control and instinct. Working repetitively and intuitively, using
neurobiological imagery as inspiration, I create an indistinct space, an inner
landscape existing within the cell, both micro and macro, personal and
universal. I require the viewer to step closer, to uncover an implied
narrative.
